Just Because You Got Room......
This is something that has been on my mind lately. I feel that I have way too many things in my house. I have more stuff than I will ever need or use. I can only speak for myself, but I feel this is true for many people. I also have things around that I don't really need but keep because I enjoy looking at them or they belonged to someone special etc. We all have our reasons and justifications for what we have. With all this said, I have a question to ask. The question is, should someone/I keep something just because we/I have enough room for it and it is not causing clutter?

I think it's all in perspective. Some people see things as clutter, others see things as essential. If it brings you joy in anyway, then it has value. If you don't like it, don't use it, but feel you must keep it because someone gave it to you, then you should give it another home. JMHO
Good question. I have too much stuff and I think it stresses my life. I want so badly to declutter my life yet I find it hard to let go of things.
How many times have you 'cleaned' a room and found things you have done without for months or years but since you "found" it again it is needed and valuable?
A friend who helped me get out from under all the clutter routinely threw things away. I asked her how she did that - In summer she stores 'stuff' laying around in bags or a box and see if she remembered to use it. Come winter she gives the box to Goodwill without looking in the contents. Same with winter, put stuff in the box or bag and if you don't use, need, or go get it by Spring, donate it to Goodwill without looking -- because you'll suddenly need it again.
The second thing is stop returning to could haves and maybes, just walk on and enjoy life as it is.
If it brings you more joy than it does clutter, hang onto it! That's my rule of thumb.
=)
We went through the whole de-cluttering thing this past summer. I felt like we had way too much stuff...even though things were not in the way. I just felt like I needed to purge some things. It felt awesome to do that. You have to decide how important each item is to you. If you can live without it, then why have it? If you love it, keep it. That's the test for me.
I am sure I have too much stuff but I do give away things every 2 to 3 months. People cannot get over the fact that I have next to nothing in my garage or attic. I truly only store seasonal items and pull them out and use when the time comes. I believe that if it is stored away and not being used then donate it, therefore the only things stored is seasonal because I use them SEASONAL. Everything else is displayed and if I buy something new then I make room by moving things around or donating.
Oh, Lordy, I think this one could have been written for me! I am heading over to amazon to check out this book . . . and regarding the "too much in the house" question - I'm faced with the same exact issue in my home. And I worry about raising my kids in an environment like that. I am trying to simplify ... but that isn't always easy. Good luck on your quest in knowing when enough is enough. Love this post!
